Where to go hiking in Deir El Ahmar

Deir El Ahmar offers hiking enthusiasts an array of exciting opportunities. As USAID’s Trade and Investment Facilitation (TIF) project is working to raise the profile of the district and improve its tourism offering, we pinpoint the best hiking trails in Deir el Ahmar.

  1. Darb Al Krane Trail

Distance: 3.5 km

Level: Moderate

This hiking adventure begins with the Darb Al Krane trail, a 3.5-kilometer path that showcases the town’s natural beauty. From a lush, tree-filled area, hikers will ascend to a hilltop to admire breathtaking views of Al Yammouneh’s mesmerizing lake.

  1. Road to the Spring Trail

Distance: 6 km

Level: Moderate

Following the Darb Al Krane trail, the Road to the Spring is a 6-kilometer journey that takes hikers through the quaint town of Ainata. This trail runs alongside a pristine water source fed by the Ainata waterfall, offering refreshing and cold water for hikers. Along the way, you’ll encounter historical gems, like old houses, mills and reserves, providing a glimpse into the town’s rich heritage.

  1. Ainata/Ouyoun Orghoch Trail

Distance: 18 km

Level: Difficult

Adventurous souls seeking a challenging hike can attempt the Ainata/Ouyoun Orghoch trail. This 18-kilometer hike starts in Ainata and concludes in the picturesque town of Ouyoun Orghoch. It winds through the Nsour valley, known for its rugged terrain. The demanding nature of this hike is rewarded with the splendid greenery and lakes of Ouyoun Orghosh.

  1. Kornet Al Sawda Trail

Distance: 18 km

Level: Difficult

Kornet Al Sawda is the ultimate test for seasoned hikers. This trail takes you to the highest peak in the Middle East, the black peak, reaching an altitude of 3,088 meters above sea level. The 18-kilometer journey offers incredible view. However, it is a challenging experience. If the full hike seems too daunting, you can hike as far as Dahr el-Qadib, which is 2,984 meters above sea level.

  1. Darb Mariam Trail

Distance: 10 km

Level: Moderate

The Darb Mariam trail is a 10-kilometer adventure that starts in the Bekaa Valley. It meanders through vineyards and grape fields, passes by the Hill of the Cross, which features the statue of Mary, and offers a glimpse of the Largest Rosary in the world. The journey ends at Saydet Bechwat, a renowned religious site.

  1. Qasr Al Banat Trail

Distance: 1.6 km

Level: Moderate

Qasr Al Banat may be a shorter hike, but it is no less captivating. From the entrance of Deir El Ahmar, the trail leads to the Roman graveyard, a site steeped in history and religious significance. The trail continues uphill to the Roman temple of Qasr Al Banat, offering panoramic views of Deir El Ahmar, the Bekaa Valley and even Baalbek.
