by LBTAdmin

Blending traditional artistry with contemporary aesthetics, Iwan Maktabi has redefined the world of carpets. With a deep appreciation for heritage and an eye for the avant-garde, the brand has built a reputation for curating and creating some of the most unique and sought-after rugs in the region. In this exclusive interview with sisters Mona and Chirine Maktabi, we explore Iwan Maktabi’s Lebanese roots, its dedication to preserving artisanal traditions and how the siblings, together with their brother Mohamed, are shaping the future of carpets through collaborations, innovation and an unwavering passion for design and for their country.

What can you tell us about the origins of Iwan Maktabi and how the company began?

The story of Iwan Maktabi is deeply rooted in our family’s heritage and passion for craftsmanship. It all began in 1926 with our grandfather Hajj Hussein Maktabi, a connoisseur from Isfahan, who embarked on a journey into the world of oriental carpets and Islamic art.

In 1995, our father carried forward this legacy by founding Iwan Maktabi, blending our family’s expertise with a fresh perspective. Now, as the third generation, we honor these traditions while infusing innovation into our designs, creating a bridge between timeless craftsmanship and contemporary artistry.

Iwan Maktabi is known for its craftsmanship. What sets your carpets apart from others in the market?

What sets us apart is our deep understanding of the region. Iwan Maktabi is a brand that grew from the Middle East, shaped by its traditions, people and craftsmanship. Our carpets are more than handcrafted pieces; they carry the stories and techniques passed down through generations. By blending heritage with innovation, we create designs that reflects both the artistry of the past and the vision of the present.

By collaborating with renowned artists and designers, we introduce fresh ideas while staying true to our regional heritage. Recently, we partnered with two distinguished Lebanese designers: Rabih Geha, who unveiled two new collections, Blip and Fold; and Leila Jureidini, whose limited-edition series “The Other Side,” offers a unique take on traditional craftsmanship.

How does Iwan Maktabi support and promote traditional Lebanese or regional weaving techniques?

Iwan Maktabi is dedicated to preserving and evolving regional weaving traditions. While our production centers are in Nepal and India, among other countries, we remain closely involved in the weaving process. Our lab recently conducted a research on traditional weaving techniques in Saudi Arabia, reinforcing our commitment to heritage. By blending research and creative partnerships, we ensure that regional weaving techniques continue to thrive while adapting to modern design needs.

What role do you believe Iwan Maktabi plays in the broader Lebanese design and art scene?

Iwan Maktabi plays an important role in Lebanon’s design and art scene by seamlessly integrating traditional and contemporary design. In a time where fiber and woven art are gaining recognition, we stand as a unique regional brand that provides a platform for local artists to express themselves through textile art. Initiatives like One Carpet for Love showcase this dedication, inviting Lebanese designers to craft unique rugs, with proceeds supporting charitable causes. By participating in major design events like We Design Beirut and collaborating with regional and international artists, Iwan Maktabi elevates the presence of Lebanese talents on the global stage. It also acts as a hub for dialog and inspiration through its galleries and cultural programming.

What are your future goals for Iwan Maktabi in terms of business expansion and community impact?

Our goal for Iwan Maktabi is to continue growing while staying connected to the creative minds and design enthusiasts who inspire us. With the opening of our flagship store in Dubai, we’ve created a space that’s not only about showcasing carpets but also about fostering creativity and collaboration. We want this store to be a home for the design community: a place for conversations, exhibitions and new ideas. Through the establishment of Iwan Lab and partnerships with incredible talents like Roula Salamoun, David/Nicolas and the latest work with Rabih Geha, we’re focused on pushing boundaries and offering something truly unique.
