Conquering New Heights: Inclusivity on the LMT

by LBTAdmin

The 4 Seasons Mountain Trails Race earlier this year marked a milestone for inclusivity in Lebanon. Indeed, “Blind with Vision,” a team of visually impaired runners, conquered the challenging terrain alongside their guides trained by the Lebanon Mountain Trail Association (LMTA). Here, we learn more.

LMTA’s Accessible Tourism Program

Renowned for its stunning landscapes and cultural richness, the Lebanon Mountain Trail (LMT) has long been a favorite among hikers. In recent years, the trail has focused on accessibility and empowerment. This has been made possible through the LMTA’s Accessible Tourism Program, which began two years ago. Initially introducing the Joelette for those with impaired mobility, the program expanded to include directional bars for the visually impaired.

A symphony of sensations

The trail, which traverses various ecosystems in the Shouf Biosphere and along the LMT, presents a unique challenge requiring both physical endurance and mental resilience.

With the support of the LMTA, the “Blind with Vision” team and guidance from their coach Mary, the visually impaired runners embraced the race with determination.

The joy of inclusivity

The race transcended the goal of merely reaching the finish line; it was a celebration of breaking barriers and highlighting the human spirit’s capacity to adapt and overcome.

As the runners crossed the finish line, they felt a profound sense of joy not just for their personal achievements but for the collective triumph of inclusivity.

This event marked a significant milestone for the LMT and Lebanon, demonstrating that with the right support and adaptations, outdoor activities can be accessible to all, regardless of physical abilities.

LMTA: staying true to its mission

As Lebanon continues to prioritize accessibility in nature, the LMT serves as a shining example of how trails can connect us all—to each other, our heritage, and the endless possibilities that arise when we include everyone in the adventure.

The success of the blind runners in the 4 Seasons Mountain Trails Race is a powerful reminder that the great outdoors is a place where everyone can find freedom, joy and a sense of accomplishment.
