For its eighth edition, Beirut Design Week (BDW) will bring together an interesting mix of disciplines, highlighting the works of prominent Lebanese and local artists from 1-7 July 2019.
Since its conception, BDW has provided a space for artists from around the world and all walks of life to network and interact. Interestingly, this year’s theme, “Design & Nostalgia,” merges the concept of nostalgia and innovations of the past with modern design.
The theme of “Design & Nostalgia” is both an inclusive and relatable choice.
This edition will also shed light on the value of heritage as well as the future of design, with a special focus on the “golden days” of Beirut, all while projecting a futuristic perspective of the local design industry.
“This year, we decided on “nostalgia,” a trending manifestation across various design disciplines,” says Rola Ghotmeh, founder of The Creative 9 agency and director of Beirut Design Week 2019. “[This theme] highlights the paradox that we live in Lebanon on a daily basis.”
We want to move people with design and art, and remind them of the positive happenings in the country, all the while providing young and established talents with a [platform] to express themselves.
This year, we expect an interesting mix of talents, as we exhibit works by prominent Lebanese designers across various disciplines, and bring in international speakers from Lebanese origins, Middle Eastern influences, or global appeal.
Beirut Design Week will open on 1 July with a lively party set to take place at Starco, one of Beirut’s most historic tower blocks. The majority of the curated program – which includes a series of installations, exhibitions, talks and workshops by local and international experts – will be held at Starco; however, another series of exhibitions and events will take place at locations around Beirut.
