For over two decades, the Beirut Marathon Association (BMA) has been a beacon of resilience, unity and hope in Lebanon. Established in 2002, the BMA has brought people together under the banner of “Peace, Love, Run,” organizing world-class events that transcend the boundaries of sport. Despite Lebanon’s current challenges, the BMA continues to embody the spirit of perseverance, finding innovative ways to support its community.
This year, in the face of unprecedented adversity, the BMA has taken its mission global. Although the traditional Beirut Marathon has been canceled, the organization has launched international Beirut Marathon events in various countries. This initiative invites people worldwide to participate in 5K, 10K, half-marathon and full-marathon races, with all proceeds directed toward supporting displaced families in Lebanon.
What inspired the idea of bringing Beirut Marathon events to different countries?
The decision to expand the Beirut Marathon internationally stems from a desire to spread Lebanon’s message of hope and resilience. According to the BMA, the idea was inspired by the global Lebanese diaspora and international communities eager to stand in solidarity with Lebanon. By hosting runs in different countries, the BMA aims to unite people worldwide in a shared mission of compassion and support.
Which cities or locations will host these runs and are there plans to expand the network?
Cities like Paris, Dubai and New York have already signed on to host these events, with plans to expand further. These locations were chosen for their strong connections to the Lebanese diaspora and their support for humanitarian causes. The BMA hopes to bring the marathon experience to even more cities in the future, building a global network of solidarity.
How have participants responded to these international events, especially with the focus on supporting displaced families in Lebanon?
The response from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Many runners feel a deep connection to the cause and are motivated by the opportunity to make a tangible difference. The international events have not only raised funds but also heightened global awareness about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Lebanon. Participants often express their gratitude for being able to support displaced families while enjoying a sense of unity through sport.
How can people who can’t participate in person contribute or get involved?
For those unable to participate in person, the BMA offers several ways to get involved. Individuals can make direct donations, which go entirely toward providing essential supplies, food and shelter to displaced families. Additionally, people can spread awareness about the cause through social media or by encouraging friends and family to join the movement.
Are there any virtual running options for those who wish to support remotely?
Yes, the BMA offers virtual running options to ensure inclusivity. Runners, walkers and joggers can complete their chosen distance from anywhere in the world, receiving a medal and t-shirt as a token of solidarity. This allows supporters to be part of the global effort regardless of their location, making it easier for anyone to contribute to the cause.
Could you share some insights on the impact these events have had so far on displaced families in Lebanon?
The proceeds from these events have already made a significant difference. One of the BMA’s key initiatives includes adopting the Al Mustakbal School in Basta, Beirut. This project supports over 86 families (412 beneficiaries) by providing nutrition, clean water, hygiene kits and medical care. These efforts are a lifeline for many who have been uprooted by conflict, offering them a sense of stability and hope for the future.
Are there any future plans or initiatives you’d like to share?
The Beirut Marathon Association remains committed to its mission of uniting people through the power of sport and compassion. Future plans include expanding the international marathon series to more cities and introducing new initiatives aimed at supporting Lebanon’s most vulnerable communities. The BMA’s dedication to transparency and good governance ensures that every dollar raised is used effectively and efficiently.
